Failure from the top on every level

-

I doubt R.J. Bray’s letter of December 29 would please the Conservative Party ‘Top Brass’ as he says mistakes have been made by the Government in its handling of the pandemic.

I may have missed something along the way, but as far as I can recall the Government has never admitted to making any mistakes whatsoever.

We seem to have been fed an endless propaganda diet of ‘Massive Success’ this,’ ‘World Beating’ that, blah, blah, blah.

As for the rest of what Mr. Bray has to say about the Government’s handling of the pandemic, I find most of it absolutely risible.

I prefer to base my opinions on facts and a few facts which Mr. Bray has either forgotten or more likely conveniently chosen to ignore are:

1. The UK still has one of the highest death tolls from the virus in the world-and also recorded the largest economic contraction from action taken to stem the first wave of the virus when comparison is made with other major industrial countries.

2. The Government may have been ‘following the science’ to some degree or other to begin with, but it is clear they significantly parted company from the science some time since.

A good example of this is ignoring the advice from SAGE for a circuit break lockdown at the end of September.

3. The on-going infections are not all about the public not following the rules.

The general consensus is most of the public do follow the rules and one very significant way in which the Government has undoubtedly let the country down is its failure to put in place an effective Test and Trace system.

We were of course promised a ‘World Beating’ Test and Trace system which would keep the virus in check as we moved forward.

Dealing with the pandemic would obviously have been an enormous challenge for any Government of any political persuasion, but for Mr. Bray to say the performance of Boris and his chums is ‘remarkable’ is well wide of the mark.

This is quite simply not supported by the facts, which I believe speak for themselves.

Let’s be positive

ONCE again I have noticed the publication of letters from Woolley and Jenkinson - the duo who know everything!

It is amazing what they know, better than the Government, scientists and other experts.

But - do they ever say what should be done or ever say anything positive?

In these very difficult and strange times we all need to be positive and optimistic.

Jobs for the boys?

SIR Lewis Hamilton, only a government of millionaires would bestow a knighthood on one of their own.
