Warnock hands Schofield some advice

HUDDERSFIELD Town once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday.

The Terriers led 1-0 against Reading, with Fraizer Campbell heading them in front. But the Royals replied as Lucas Joao hit a 13-minute brace to turn the game on its head.

Town had a few sniffs at levelling up but couldn’t prevent a first defeat on home soil since early November.

Joao’s two goals were well taken, with his first a caressed effort and his second a killer strike from outside the box. Speaking on Quest’s EFL show, former England and Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock praised Joao’s quality – but said Town stopper Ryan Schofield was possibly at fault for the second.

Warnock said: “Joao has seven goals in seven games and that first goal is all about strength. But the second goal is about awareness.

“It’s about knowing what’s around you with the drag-back and then he catches the ‘keeper unaware.

“For me, the goalkeeper should be a yard or two off his line.

“He should be closing his goal down a little bit more.”

To be fair, Schofield did pull off a fine save with Town 1-0 up.

Just before the break he made a point-blank stop to keep out Tom Holmes’ close-range header from an inswinging free-kick.

It should have been the platform for the hosts to push on and indeed they could have retaken their lead shortly after being pulled back level.

Lewis O’Brien’s centre narrowly evaded Isaac Mbenza. Had that gone in, it could have been an entirely different outcome.
