Watson putting Giants through the hard yards

- By CHRIS OSTICK

KENNY Edwards admits the start of pre-season training under new Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson has been ‘bloody tough.’

The Claret and Gold squad returned last week to prepare for the new Super League campaign.

The season is due to start on March 11, but as reported in yesterday’s Examiner, that is now likely to be put back with Covid cases still on the increase around the country.

A working group of Super League officials and club representatives tasked with assessing the fixture list is expected to meet in the coming days and make a final decision, which will likely be announced at the start of next week.

But the Giants are still gearing up for what they hope will be a successful season under new head coach Watson.

And the former Salford Red Devils boss has made an instant impression on forward Edwards.

“It has been bloody tough,” the New Zealander told GiantsTV.

““Pre-season is pre-season. It is always going to be tough, but last Tuesday was probably one of the hardest days I have had in a long time.

“But the new personnel have brought in a new energy. Everything is up tempo, getting us ready for game speed.

“That is where we lacked a little last year, in those tough games we sort of faded away.

“If we are training at this intensity, when it comes to the games we will be ready to go.

“Last year, we started the season really well. After lockdown we had some really tight loses when we were ahead with 15 minutes to go, we fazed out of games when we shouldn’t have done.
