WORK GATHERS PACE ON MULTI-MILLION POUND LEISURE HUB THAT WILL FEATURE CINEMA, BOWLING ALLEY AND RESTAURANT
WORK is progressing on the Kingsgate Centre, which is earmarked to host a multi-million pound entertainment complex.
The latest element of the revamp, to include a cinema to be run by The Light, a bowling alley, restaurants and other leisure facilities, involves filling in the existing south service yard exit to form a new unit and entrance. Planning permission was granted by Kirklees Council last week. The unit will be designated for “flexible use” that includes cinemas, music and concert halls, bingo and dance halls but excluding nightclubs.
Kingsgate boss Peter Everest, managing director of WD Ltd, said the latest plans approved by Kirklees Council were “part of the wider picture that will be Kingsgate Leisure, a project that will invigorate and boost the centre of the town.
“We are working to ensure that the project is comprehensive and up to the minute.”
The redevelopment of Kingsgate, with the multiplex and restaurants taking over premises currently occupied by House of Fraser, forms part of the so-called Huddersfield Blueprint.
Kirklees Council is committing £250m to the 10-year vision to reimagine the town centre and has given a £7m loan towards making the Kingsgate project a reality. Work is set to get underway this year.
The Blueprint has also seen the council buy the iconic 19th century George Hotel and the 1970s Piazza.
