Town’s biggest gym to close in ‘massive loss for community’

LOCKDOWNS HAVE HAD ‘MAJOR IMPACT’ SAYS CEO

HUDDERSFIELD’S biggest gym, Total Fitness on Wakefield Road, Waterloo, is to close.

The closure has been described as a “massive loss to the community” by readers who contacted The Examiner.

Sophie Lawler, CEO of Total Fitness, said: “This has been a very difficult decision to make as I know how important the club is to many people in Huddersfield.

“Not just in terms of health and wellbeing, but as a community space.

“The cumulative effects of the lockdown restrictions have had a major impact on gym and health clubs across the UK.

“Total Fitness clubs have now been closed for eight months.

“With membership payments on pause, this means we are operating with very limited income and continuing costs.

“Across the UK approximately 400 gyms, pools and leisure centres have already been forced to close due to financial pressures, and we’ve have had to make some really difficult decisions to support the longterm future of the business.

“The most difficult of those decisions was to close the Huddersfield club.

“We are offering as many team members as possible new roles at our Wakefield club or elsewhere in the business and are supporting our freelance personal trainers who wish to rebuild their businesses in our other clubs.

“Anyone who has been affected by the closure has been informed and we are making every effort to support these individuals throughout the process.”
