Hogg leads the way for Town so far this season!

- By STEVEN CHICKEN @examinerHTAFC

IT has been a mixed first season for Huddersfield Town under Carlos Corberan.

There have been some good performances, and some truly bad ones.

So here are our Town ratings so far, although before we get started, just a note on our criteria for scoring. We’re doing it based on what we expected of each player coming into this season or when they signed, with a 6 being ‘done about as well as we expected.’

One player’s ratings does not necessarily compare to another on a like-for-like basis as a result.

We’re also only including players who have made at least five first-team appearances of at least 15 minutes each - so no Yaya Sanogo, Kieran Phillips, Matty Daly or Scott High.

BEN HAMER

THE fact that a segment of Huddersfield Town fans were disappointed to see Hamer leave in January tells you how much he was able to turn things around over the first half of this season.

Previously seen as...well, frankly, a bit dodgy in goal, Hamer put in a series of assured performances and his distribution played a key part in helping Town play out from the back. Restored his reputation superbly ....................................... 7

RYAN SCHOFIELD

HAS not been without his critics. There are obvious flaws in his game, particularly with high balls into the box, but that some of that criticism has been a bit over-stated. It’s worth remembering he is only 21 and has more than enough potential to be worth giving a fair chance of showing he can get those weaknesses out of his game.

All that said, there have been some notable blunders and we can’t claim that Schofield has exceeded our expectations. We already knew he was a brilliant shot-stopper. In a strange way, this mark is more of a compliment than the higher mark we awarded Hamer .......................................... 6

RARMANI EDMONDS-GREEN WE suspected the centre-back was ready for more regular Championship football, and he has stepped up to prove exactly that.

Like Schofield, he has not been without his faults. He can be sold dummies a bit too easily at times, and he is still learning how much more defenders can get away with physically at this level. But on the whole he has fitted in superbly, helping the side keep five clean sheets in his 13 starts .................. 7

RICHARD KEOGH

LET’S be honest, we didn’t expect much out of Keogh, did we? But credit to him, we now wouldn’t make a particularly strong argument in favour of dropping him. Given he was only brought in to play a handful of games until Edmonds-Green, Richard Stearman and, it was then hoped, Christopher Schindler were back fit, that’s pretty impressive ......... 7

NABY SARR

A DIFFICULT one to mark, because he’s so frequently either an 8 or a 4 with very little in between. This is probably recent bias after some excellent showings lately but we feel the good still just about outweighs the bad with Sarr on the whole, and in fairness Charlton fans did warn us we might get this with him ............... 6

CHRISTOPHER SCHINDLER OUT of the side for a stretch even when fit, but even when he wasn’t at his best, the skipper was never disastrous, just slightly underwhelming. His incredible performance away to Swansea was a particular standout and he was enjoying a good outing against QPR before suffering what could be a season-ending injury .......... 6

RICHARD STEARMAN ANOTHER tricky one. Over the first dozen or so games of the season he was one of Town’s best players, Norwich error notwithstanding. His recent omission from the starting line-up is more to do with Keogh having done enough to keep his place than any lack of faith in Stearman. So although it might seem a bit strange based on recent weeks we’re going to reward that early-season form in mind . 7

JADEN BROWN

NOMINALLY Town’s secondchoice left-back but hasn’t been able to get a Championship start there despite Harry Toffolo having been suspended and then injured since early February. Has not got off the bench since picking up two yellow cards in the space of 14 minutes at Derby ......................... 4

DEMEACO DUHANEY

HAS not had many opportunities to impress and not particularly made an impression when he has got those rare chances. As it stands it’s difficult to see him mounting a serious push to become Town’s first-choice right-back ................ 5

PIPA

ARRIVED for around £500,000 as a virtual unknown on these shores but has emerged as one of the best attacking full-backs in the division, let alone one of Town’s best players. He’s had a couple of wobbles and had a particularly poor February, but that’s inevitable for a young-ish player in his first season in a new country playing as many minutes as he has ........................ 8

AARON ROWE

ARGUABLY the breakout star of the second half of the season. There’s a danger now that we make Rowe out to be better than he really is off the back of what realistically is just two or three encouraging outings among three or four pretty so-so performances, but it’s hard to shake the feeling the youngster might have something a bit special about him. Rowe has jumped the queue to get ahead of both Brown and Duhaney as second choice for both full-back roles, and that’s about as much as anyone could have asked . .......... 7 ■■HARRY TOFFOLO

MR Consistent has been a big miss even despite the side’s recent upturn in form. Toffolo was the runaway leader in our early thoughts for player of the season but, understandably, found that incredible standard difficult to maintain over Christmas and into the new year. This spell on the sidelines might do him a bit of good in the longer term.

Still, only Josh Koroma even gets close to him for average game-bygame player ratings over the whole season, and Toffolo is unquestionably one of the Terriers’ best two or three players ................................ 8

JUNINHO BACUNA

OUR worst-rated player when we handed out our marks in November. Bacca was truly dreadful over the first few months of the season but began to turn the corner around Christmas and has generally been much better since then – albeit with the odd stinker still popping up here and there.

There are three big things in Bacuna’s favour – he’s never injured, he’s really versatile, and despite everything, he does contribute.

Only Fraizer Campbell, Josh Koroma and Isaac Mbenza have played a direct part in as many Town goals as Bacuna this season (four goals, three assists). He’s probably had the exact season we would have expected .................. 6

CAREL EITING

WE were generally a bit underwhelmed by some of Eiting’s performances either side of an especially strong purple patch in late November-early December, but the Dutchman’s absence has only made our heart grow fonder.

Town have plenty of central midfield options to choose from but only Alex Vallejo comes close to Eiting spotting and executing a pass nobody else would even consider. It’s no coincidence Town’s sudden inability to play out from the back after the turn of the new year coincided precisely with Eiting’s knee injury ..................... 6

JONATHAN HOGG

THE only man in the starting lineup for each of Town’s victories this
