HUDDERSFIELD Town look set to be facing a summer of change.
There are 14 players heading into the final few months of their Terriers’ contracts, not to mention loan signings Carel Eiting and Joel Pereira.
Respected industry website Transfermarkt pulls together financial-related info on a range of football subjects, including player values.
They estimate Carlos Corberan’s squad as having a total value worth £36.4m - the 15th highest in the Championship.
However, the total value of the players whose deals have yet to be extended comes out at a whopping £17.6m - almost half the entire squad value.
Among this group is Isaac Mbenza and Juninho Bacuna, each of whom are listed as having a market value of £4.5m.
The caveat to all this is that, of course, Town have one-year extension options on a number of these players.
The clause is technically known as a unilateral extension clause (UEC), and gives clubs the ability to trigger extra years on the contract at their discretion, without offering the same power to the player (that would be a reciprocal extension clause).
Town nearly always limit this to a one-year extension clause.
That is not to assume every player with such a clause will automatically be staying.
Note the previous example of Erik Durm who was allowed to leave on a free transfer in 2019, rather than trigger an extension that would have kept him at the club.
Town have handed out fresh deals to Ryan Schofield and Jonathan Hogg during the season, but it looks as though it will be another busy summer as the club prepare to make decisions on the make-up of their squad going forwards.
