Mystery stone found on moor

RAMBLER PUZZLED BY OBJECT WEDGED IN GROUND

-

A walker has been left stumped after coming across a mysterious stone on Marsden Moor.

Paul Baddeley was out for a stroll on the moor last Tuesday when an unusual object caught his eye.

The 65-yearold had stopped to catch his breath when, by chance, h e noticed a piece of curved stone wedged in the ground.

“It was heavy going and I thought to myself ‘I’ll just take a break here,’” he said. “That’s when I saw this curved stone. If you look further down it has got something which resembles a neck and then a base. I thought ‘wow, what the hell is that’?” Paul contacted numerous people - including archaeologists - to ask for their help in identifying the stone, which he believes could be man-made. As it stands, no one has been able to give him a definitive answer. One theory suggested to Paul was that the stone could have been taken from

the window arch of an old building nearby.

But Paul said he has completely dismissed the idea due to the secluded area in which he found the stone.

“There’s no way anybody could have carried it to where it is and there is no track nearby, so it can not have been stuck on a cart - or something similar,” he said.

Paul, from Huddersfield, said he is now considering returning to the spot to take another look at the object which is playing on his mind.

“It’s a complete mystery and I don’t like things baffling me,” he said.
