SURVEY PICKS ROADSIDE BREAKS WORTH STOPPING FOR AS FAMILIES SET TO MAKE LONG JOURNEYS AGAIN

- By CHARLIE WILSON editorial@examiner.co.uk @examiner

AS families prepare to hit the road from April 12 when attractions like zoos and theme parks as well as some self catering properties finally take the dust covers off, all service stations in the UK have been ranked.

And in the top 10 featured a Yorkshire service station with Wetherby on the A1 scoring 61 and finishing in fifth place.

Gloucester Services on the M5 was crowned king of roadside break with a score of 86 and five stars for cleanliness, range of shops and facilities.

The survey of more than 2,700 Brits placed Tebay Services on the M6 near the Lake District second with a score of 83 and Cairn Lodge on the M74 in Lanarkshire took third spot with 69.

Wetherby’s Moto services off of the A1 features a Marks & Spencers, WH Smith, Burger King, KFC, Greggs, Costa Coffee, West Cornwall Pastry Co, Chow, Krispy Kreme and a Days Inn hotel.

The service station’s reviews are full of positive praises by motorists, with one man even going so far as to praise the motorway stop better than the Sistine Chapel!

The man who left the review on Google in 2018 said: “I’ve sipped a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar at Raffles hotel in Singapore. I’ve enjoyed champagne cocktails whilst watching the sun set over the Pacific ocean from Santa Monica pier.

“I’ve carried a bottle of 25 year old

The most glamorous I have ever felt was knocking back a coconut latte in Wetherby Services

Dalwhinnie malt whisky to the summit of Helvellyn, to drink whilst wild camping under the stars. Indisputably though - the most glamorous I have ever felt, was whilst knocking back a Costa coconut latte in the stunning grounds of Wetherby Services off the A1.

“With a bag of Percy Pigs from

Marks & Spencer knocking my taste buds out of the park, and the odour of diesel fumes mixing seductively with the scent of the flame grilled Angus Whopper being consumed enthusiastically by the toothless man sharing a picnic bench with me, I have a good claim to say I’ve enjoyed the full multisensory experience here. After taking an overdue and much needed slash in the impeccably maintained restroom, I stepped back outside to take in one of England’s great sights one more time. The Sistine chapel may have exquisite frescoes adorning its famous vaulted ceilings - but if Michaelangelo ever had the chance to gaze upon the steel grey skies of West Yorkshire framing the largest single span petrol station roof in northern Europe, I suspect he may have downed tools forever, having witnessed the pinnacle of man’s artistic achievement in the shape of the BP garage.

“I stared in awe until the drizzle soaked the collar of my fleece, before stealing some serviettes from the Wild Bean Cafe to dry tears of wonder from my eyes. I gathered my thoughts, before driving to Pontefract to pick up a wheelbarrow. An unforgettable journey.”

All service stations ranked by Which? said by mapping out routes, drivers could avoid the pitfalls of shabby service stations by stopping off at more inviting ones within striking distance.
