Who will be the next Doctor?
THE race to replace Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who is hotting up.
I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel is favourite to take over the role, according to the latest odds from Betfair. It’s a Sin star Olly Alexander and Line of Duty actress Kelly Macdonald are now neckand-neck in second place to become the 14th Doctor.
Huddersfield-born Jodie bagged the prestigious part after her stand-out performance in Broadchurch, playing the grieving mother Beth Latimer. She took over from Peter Capaldi in 2017 as the first female incarnation of the much-loved time lord, and while it is yet to be confirmed, it is widely rumoured that she is set to leave at the end of the 13th series.
Jodie has said she loved playing the Doctor, adding “there’s something emotional, poetic and very humbling about being in the show, because you’re a tiny little jigsaw piece of something that is so precious to so many people.”
It’s long been rumoured that Olivia Colman, who appeared alongside Jodie in Broadchurch, could take on the role but her odds have dropped to 25/1.
Richard Ayoade, from the IT Crowd, comes in at 8/1, alongside Maxine Peake and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Tom Rosenthal, of Friday Night
Dinner, Michael Sheen and Idris Elba are all in the running, along with another Line of Duty fan favourite, Vicky McClure.
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Line of Duty fans will be excited to see Kelly MacDonald’s odds slashed into 6/1 joint-second favourite to become the next Time Lord, having wowed fans in the opening episodes of the current series as the scheming Joanne Davidson. The race to be Jodie Whittaker’s replacement has heated up recently, with fellow Line of Duty star Vicky McClure at 12/1 – while Olly Alexander is the new joint- second favourite after his role in It’s A Sin won plaudits. But the favourite in the betting is still Michaela Coel at 4/1.”
