Yorkshire in trouble despite Ben’s burst

- By TOM EVANS

A BURST of wickets from Ben Coad helped drag Yorkshire back from the depths in their LV= County Championship opener against Glamorgan at Emerald Headingley.

But they were still well behind as they headed for the close of day two, having conceded a first innings lead of 137.

Resuming yesterday morning on 310/8, Glamorgan’s last two wickets didn’t detain the hosts long, and they wrapped up the innings for 330.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore started the procession with a wild swipe at a wide Michael Hogan half-volley.

And despite a punchy 52 from Adam Lyth, ended by a hooping Dan Douthwaite inswinger, Yorskshire’s top order misfired – none more so than England Test captain Joe Root, who slogged a Callum Taylor full-toss down the throat of Douthwaite at long-on.

From 79/4, Harry Brook’s 40 and Dom Bess’s unbeaten 38 offered a little more resistance, but after David Lloyd trapped Brook half-forward, the rest subsided for 193 in less than two sessions’ worth of cricket.

There were two wickets each for Douthwaite, Taylor, Lloyd and Michael Hogan but no standout performer among the Glamorgan attack.

Coad – who finished with 4/94 in the first innings – at least showed there was some life in the pitch for the bowlers, finding the outside edges of Nick Selman, Lloyd and Kiran Carlson. With Andy Balbirnie falling to a fine catch by Brook off the bowling of Duanne Olivier, Glamorgan were at one stage 29/4.

But that still represented a healthy lead and – with Billy Root and Chris Cooke batting for the close as the went to press – one the visitors have plenty of time to convert.
