Bed factory inferno
HUGE FIRE AT FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS SEEN FOR MILES
A HUGE fire ravaged a bed-making factory – with flames and smoke seen miles away.
The blaze in Savile Town, Dewsbury, was so intense that there were reports of it being visible 10 miles away in Almondbury.
Eight fire engines and two aerial appliances raced to the Matza factory at Bretton Park Industrial Estate and spent several hours putting out the blaze.
The building, where more than 50 employees work, has been based there for around 15 years. Yesterday, a member of the family-run business said he was too upset to talk.
Although West Yorkshire Police officers were stood outside the property’s entrances, it is understood there is no suggestion that the fire was started deliberately.
Northern Gas Networks and Northern Powergrid staff were busy making sure the site was safe while fire investigation officers were trying to establish how the blaze had been started.
A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said: “We received a call last night from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service at 8.35pm regarding a fire at Matza. Our engineers attended to support the emergency services and checked that the fuses at the local substation had activated as they should to safely isolate supplies to the factory.
“Once the fire was fully extinguished, our teams returned today to also disconnect the underground electricity cable that links the factory to our network. No other customers’ supplies were affected.”
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
