HOUSES are being proposed for two parcels of grassland in Meltham.

The land, totalling 1.7 acres, is next to Dathan Tools off

Mean Lane and close to both Meltham Cricket Club and Meltham Sports & Community Centre.

It is earmarked for 20 homes on two cul-de-sacs with 14 houses on the northern plot and six plus a pumping station to combat potential drainage issues on the southern plot.

An outline proposal is set to go before Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-Committee on Wednesday and is recommended for approval.

It involves eight detached and 12 semi-detached houses, as well as a detached garage block of two. Each dwelling house would have a large driveway as well as front and rear gardens.

A fifth of the homes will be designated as affordable housing.

No information has been provided regarding the house types proposed.

If additional places are required at Meltham Moor Primary School and Honley High School then an education contribution may become payable.

Meltham Town Council has given its support subject to contributions to pay for improvements at the recreation ground and sports centre as well as extensions to Meltham Greenway as part of improving cycling access to work.

The site is within Kirklees’ Local Plan, which will see tens of thousands of new homes built in the borough.

An order from the government, the Local Plan includes 31,000 homes, many of which will have to be built within the green belt, as the council says there is insufficient non-green belt land in the borough.

It equates to building 1,730 homes per annum in the borough.
