YORKSHIRE beat Kent by 200 runs in their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Canterbury, but they were frustrated for much of day four by night-watchman Matt Milnes, who hit a career-best 78.

David Willey eventually finished Kent off with 5-61, backed up by Jordan Thompson who took 3-24 to give Yorkshire 23 points.

Milnes batted for over four-and-ahalf hours and faced 210 balls, including an 89-minute partnership with Darren Stevens, who was Kent’s next highest scorer with 47.

Resuming on 33-2 and trailing by 411, the hosts got off to a dismal start

Giants career, but came on after the interval to help inspire Huddersfield’s comeback.

“He (Ian Watson) just said what we already knew, that we lacked a bit of energy in the first half,” said the 30-year-old.

“They broke us down a bit too easy and it wasn’t good enough.

“He didn’t really have to say too much, we knew it wasn’t good enough in that first half.

“When you’re playing a Super League team, you can’t give them head starts like that. when they lost Daniel BellDrummond for 24 to a spectacular inswinger from Willey.

Joe Denly scored 30 from 33 balls and lingered for the best part of an hour, but he fell to a jaffa from Thompson that was caught behind. Jack Leaning was then out for a duck when he edged his sixth ball, from Thompson, to Tom Kohler-Cadmore

“We picked it up in the second half and got ourselves back in the game but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”

Watson explained his thinking behind starting with Gaskell on the back, saying: “Darnell (McIntosh) had played there, and Sam Wood played there last week and did really well, so we backed those guys, with Aidan (Sezer) coming back in.

“We had the opportunity to utilise Gasky later on. He was outstanding in the second half.” at first slip, but Robinson and Milnes survived until lunch.

Kent frustrated Yorkshire throughout the afternoon session, with Milnes bringing up his maiden first-class 50 and Ollie Robinson making a measured 28. Robinson perished when he edged Duanne Olivier to wicketkeeper Jonathan Tatershall, but Stevens joined Milnes to bat through to tea.

The new ball finally accounted for Milnes, who was lbw to Willey. Two overs later Stevens was caught at mid-on by Joe Root off Willey and with Harry Podmore unable to bat due to injury, Yorkshire clinched the win when the same bowler had Miguel Cummins lbw.
