Blast for ‘horrible people’ who ruined reopening
RESIDENTS have voiced their anger after a pub’s first weekend open was wrecked by rowdy punters.
Bosses at The Blacksmith’s Arms in Kirkheaton had spent a large amount of money creating a cosy wood-panelled beer garden for 100 people, as well as a fire pit. But a “small minority” of drinkers caused problems, making it an “uncomfortable experience” for staff at the popular pub - and resulting in new opening hours and a ban on the fire pit.
In a statement, the management said abuse aimed at staff would not be tolerated.
Reacting to the news on YorkshireLive’s Facebook page, readers criticised the punters’ behaviour and called for bans.
“Bring in the banning,” said one. “The customer is NOT always right and pub staff in particular have a legal right to refuse to serve based on how they perceive people’s levels of intoxication.”
Another reader backed the idea of bans, saying she was “not surprised” at the behaviour.
“There’s always a minority that spoil it for the majority,” she said. “Well done to the pub for managing to jump through every hoop, and more, and please ... ban the ignorant, selfish and, quite frankly, immature cohort.”
A third commenter went further, calling for rowdy punters’ pictures to be put up on pub walls.
“Put their photos on the wall and bar them like they used to do,” she said. “Horrible people spoiling it for the decent folk.”
Another complained some people “have forgotten how to be civilised” after the threemonth coronavirus lockdown.
“They need weaning back into society,” he said.
