‘Craigy is the best caterpillar cake around!’

A CAKE store has waded into the Caterpillar Cake wars, creating lotus flavoured caterpillar ‘Craigy’ in support of Aldi’s Cuthbert.

Ruddi’s is a charity cake shop, belonging to the wider charity Ruddi’s Retreat, that supports children battling cancer.

The store is located in Slaithwaite and is determined to support what they call the ‘caterpillar underdog.’

It follows news M&S are taking legal action against Aldi, accusing the budget supermarket of copying their Colin the Caterpillar cake with their Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake.

Sharing their latest take on the infamous cake, they introduced Craigy with the hashtag #freecuthbert.

Showing a photo of their version to social media, they wrote: “Yes we went there .... Craigy The Caterpillar! This homemade Lotus Swiss roll is made with love using the best ingredients we can source.

“Craigy comes on an edible grass display board and we may be biased, but honestly he is bigger and better than ANY of the supermarket Caterpillars.”

The cake shop operates as an outlet to support Ruddi’s Retreat, a charity seeking to provide respite for families with a child battling cancer.

Ali Jones, charity founder spoke of the tough time they have faced during the pandemic: “It’s been really tough, but we won’t go down without a fight as the families we support at Ruddi’s Retreat really really need our help.

“We are a children’s cancer charity that send families on holiday - we have 4 caravans in Filey, North Yorkshire and send families on free respite holidays.

“The charity began after my son Ruddi inspired me to help others like him.

“We also now have a little cake shop and cafe in Slaithwaite, which I thought was a better idea than just another charity shop.

“I think the Cuthbert saga is pure genius, the marketing is something people like myself can only dream of so I thought why not try and get on the back of it.

“Of course Craigy, named after my husband, is a lot tastier as he is homemade and who doesn’t love a bit of Lotus - there are other flavours available.

“Being a small charity, we always support the underdog as we can relate - hence our #TeamCuthbert.”

Craigy is available either large for £20 or small for £10.
