‘Distress’ as dead dog is found

BODY OF ANIMAL DISCOVERED BARELY COVERED CLOSE TO POPULAR WALKING SPOT

A WOMAN has spoken of the “distress” caused after the body of a dead dog was found near a popular dog-walking route in Huddersfield.

Pyretta Blayze, who runs a voluntary rescue charity Huddersfield Feral and Strays, was contacted by a woman who found the dead “young female dog” covered in a bin liner and a duvet in Kilner Bank.

When the body was found, the face of the white dog believed to be a cross between a German shepherd and a Golden retriever was covered but the dog’s tail and legs were poking out.

Pyretta added that it looked like the dog had been in the area for a couple of weeks due to the stage of decomposition and the “bad” smell.

Pyretta along with her colleague Emma contacted the RSPCA and West Yorkshire Police after recovering the dog but was told it was not chipped and the RSPCA could not conduct an investigation into it as a result.

However, she added the charity said the body could have just been “fly-tipped” by its owner but Pyretta fears it could have been stolen due to the way it was “dumped” and a few months ago another dog was found near where the female dog was found.

“It’s really distressing, we were hoping the dog might’ve been chipped, we can’t get it back to the owner or find out why it was dumped like a piece of rubbish, it’s hard for animal lovers, we find it shocking but we’re seeing more and more animals being dumped,” she said.

“I can’t imagine someone who is unaccustomed would have felt coming across it especially because it had been covered in a duvet, placed in a bin bag and thrown into some bushes. It was a young female dog and someone threw her away like a piece of rubbish.”

Pyretta believes that the dog could have been stolen and believes people need to be aware of what has been happening in the area with pets being dumped.

She continued: “It’s really popular and people go up there and walk their dogs. People would’ve seen it. “The legs and tail were sticking up. “Because the dog has not no microchip, they (the RSPCA) can’t do anything, it’s more to raise awareness of what’s happened, we don’t have any authority or power, we just run a rescue charity.

“It could be someone’s pet because they took time to cover it unless it was stolen.

“We’re seeing more and more [pets being dumped] because unfortunately there’s not a lot of people who go out and do this but we try to.

“From our point of view, I wouldn’t want my kids to see it, it’s really distressing.”

West Yorkshire Police have been contacted by Yorkshire Live for comment.
