‘In any other season they’d be in trouble’

Forest, without which they’d be in real trouble. But in terms of performances, we’re struggling to think of a worse nadir, save perhaps the run of games in February: Luton, Wycombe, Middlesbrough, Derby, Preston.

The numbers suggest this is even worse than that. Three of Town’s worst five performances of the season in terms of expected goal difference have come in the space of the last six games – Norwich, Barnsley and Blackburn – and we’d absolutely throw the draw against Rotherham in there as being as bad as anything we’ve seen this season.

Town didn’t play brilliantly in

March but at least they were picking up points. Now, despite having had ample time to get used to playing different systems, despite the returns of several key players from injury, despite their last five games including matches against the teams currently in 15th, 17th and 22nd, they are more frail in defence and hapless in attack than they have ever been. And those last five games don’t even include the 7-0 defeat to

Norwich. wavered. I still believe he is a highly talented head coach and the man for us, and his staff – like all of the staff in the entire club – are exceptional; we saw evidence of how we’re aiming to perform during the first half of the season.”

For the sake of argument, let’s accept for a moment the idea that Corberan may be an exceptional coach, and that he’s just having a first season like Daniel Farke had at Norwich.

If the club so firmly believe that Corberan is the right man for the job, then who exactly do they hold accountable for a strong side getting so comprehensively battered – the second hammering they’ve taken in the space of 19 days? During which time, by the way, they can also count themselves lucky that Rotherham didn’t also beat them and that Barnsley wasted several chances to win by more than a single goal.

We are not in the habit of calling for heads to roll because things are rarely as black and white as a lot of fans would like to make out. But
