Security questions as hill problems continue

- By TONY EARNSHAW Local Democracy Reporter @LdrTony

ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour is continuing at Huddersfield’s iconic Castle Hill despite the installation of a costly road barrier this week for an 18-month trial.

And questions have been asked over the effectiveness of security personnel who, despite being on site, have reportedly not acted to clear cars and occupants from the hill summit.

Following requests from local residents Kirklees Council paid for a lockable barrier at the base of Castle Hill to prevent vehicular access at night. It is managed by private security firm Admiral, which already looks after other council-operated sites.

It is understood anyone who does not heed closure times and stays on the hill after the barrier is locked may have to pay a fee to release their vehicle. The amount has not been made public.

The council says it isn’t charging to release cars but is “reserving the right do so”.

Castle Hill has become notorious as a magnet for anti-social behaviour – including raves, drug-dealing, and groups involved in “dogging”.

The council has been urged to speed up its response by local councillor Bernard McGuin, who said: “Residents don’t feel action is taking place quickly enough. What’s the point of having a barrier if you’re not prepared to lock it?

“Admiral staff have found cars on the hill on three occasions. They are supposed to lock the gate and if anyone is stuck and wants to come down, they have to pay a release fee.

“That’s the ultimate aim but the council seems to be pulling back on that for as long as possible.

“I have now asked for a definite date.” The hill will be closed from 7pm-7am (Mar-May and Sep-Oct), 9pm-7am (Jun-Aug) and 4.30pm-7am (Nov-Feb).
