KEN Davy believes Super League’s new TV deal brings a huge source of potential, despite a near 40 per cent reduction in funding.

The new agreement, worth a reported £25m per season, will see Sky Sports show 66 games for the next two years.

However, Sky will also enhance the production of every match across the competition with their coverage free to be used by other broadcasters. That will allow Super League to offer 10 free-to-air games for the next two seasons to broadcasters, including two play-off games at the end of the season.

All remaining matches will be made accessible to fans through other services, such as streaming.

Video referees will also be at every game as part of the coverage. As a result, Huddersfield Giants owner and Super League’s interim chairman Davy is confident they can open further revenue streams to help recuperate some of the money lost from the previous £40m-a-year deal.

“We’re in discussions with a number of broadcasting parties,” he said. “One of the exciting things of the new deal is there’s going to be enhanced coverage of every match, a big screen and video referee at every match. That gives us an opportunity at free-to-air matches with other broadcasters and the opportunity to beam every game to supporters and the wider public.

“The enhanced production coverage Sky will be doing and making is essential to us effectively selling on and has tremendous potential when you look at the 10 games that will be free-to-air. The enhanced production facilities of Sky are going to be delivered to every Super League match and then we’ll have the opportunity to beam that to fans and the wider public.

“Streaming is part of it, it will be for the Super League clubs to determine both collectively and individually how we do that.”

Davy also confirmed the RFL would receive a percentage of the new TV deal to help fund the governing body, as well as clubs in the Championship and League 1.

“We’re all having to take a haircut, as are all sports because it’s common knowledge deals have been south of what they have been previously.”
