Family’s Spanish dream turns sour

A FAMILY have been left stranded and reliant on food banks in Benidorm after losing their jobs.

Mum-of three Lindsey Ever and her partner Peter Chadwick are desperate to return to the UK after their Spanish dream turned distinctly sour.

They moved to the Costa Blanca resort 10 years ago but face eviction from their flat later this month after falling behind on the rent.

Benidorm has been heavily hit by the pandemic, with tourists forced to stay away.

Waitress Lindsey, 41, and chef Peter, 56, lost their jobs in the first Costa Blanca Covid lockdown last year and have struggled to find new work since.

They have set up a Gofundme page to raise money for their journey home and have so far raised 1,847 Euros with a goal of 2,000.

The page reads: “It is with a very heavy heart and much sadness we have had to make the difficult decision to return to the UK.

“Not because we want to but because we can no longer support ourselves and our children here. We have had no help from the government or local town hall despite applying for help.

“We are desperate to return, but have no money to self-isolate nor do we have accommodation.

“We have always worked during the years we have lived here, working all the hours necessary to give our children a life they deserve.

“We through no fault of our own have been put in this awful position of not being able to support ourselves or our children.

“We desperately need funding to get home and to find somewhere to stay while we approach the relevant authorities to find us a new home and rebuild our lives.

“So that once again we can give our children the future they deserve. Please help us so we can make this possible.

“This is the first time in our lives we have ever had to ask publicly for funding please understand how hard this is for us.”

And Lindsey, from Halifax, stressed that they are anxious to find jobs, saying: “We wish to go back to the UK and find work as soon as possible, not to claim benefits.

“That wouldn’t be viable. We have been let down by the Spanish government and our claims of what we are entitled to have not even come through yet, hence why we are having to return home.

“We are literally going back to nothing at all but what we can fit in the car.”
