Pubs rapped for allowing customers to order indoors
TRYING TO SAVE MONEY ON STAFF
PUB landlords have been given strict instructions on how to serve customers after several Kirklees pubs were found to be allowing them to order indoors.
Kirklees Council says this habit is completely against the rules and any landlords reported to them will be receiving a visit for its officers.
A pub insider told The Examiner part of the reason for it happening was an attempt by landlords to save money by not having to hire so many waiters and waitresses.
A council spokesman said: “Serving or ordering alcohol can currently only happen outdoors, with only table service allowed.
“We have received reports of some pubs allowing people to order indoors and are investigating this.
“We will visit and ensure the owners are aware of the latest Covid-19 rules that need to be followed.
“We are also carrying out proactive advice and support visits to hospitality premises in conjunction with the police.
“These visits have been happening across the district since the hospitality sector reopened and will continue throughout the next few months.”
Kirklees councillor Bernard McGuin, (Con, Almondbury), said: “I have been in a couple of pubs where procedures have been somewhat lax - people were going to the bar and carrying their drinks out themselves - and I think they are having to tighten it up.
“But Kirklees is given them a warning first and I think they have handled it as the best they can.
“It must be costing the landlords a lot of money in hiring all these new staff.”
