FOR four decades, traditional fish and chips from the chippy on Leeds Road were an indispensable prematch ritual of watching Huddersfield Town on a Saturday afternoon.

But now the chip shop has been taken on by new owners who have given the traditional northern dish an Asian twist.

With the help of well-known Huddersfield restaurateur Shehzad Hussain, KeSam Chippy is selling masala fish and chips and Shehzad says the punters prefer it to the more traditional recipe.

He said: “We opened in November and the most promising thing has been the response of customers.

“Huddersfield is sometimes seen as a rather drab, provincial town with a palette to match but that’s not been our experience.

“Our customers have embraced the Asian-style fish and chips with gusto.”

And the chippy’s offerings have won praise from non-other than former Yorkshire Post food critic Robert Cockroft, who said: “This is not the stuff found in some restaurants but fish in a spiced conventional batter which is fried – like the chips – in halal beef dripping.

“The fish is then dressed with a sweeter masala sauce and fresh chilies.

“The gentle spicing of the fish was delightful and the crisp chips, with their spice dusting, were superb.

“For starters, there was a fine

samosa and a superb chicken kebab. All are made to Shehzad’s recipes.

“He believes that he’s not spoiling traditional fish and chips, just giving them a fresh interpretation.”

Shehzad’s parents ran the Memsahib, a great little curry house, opposite the University of Huddersfield from where Shehzad graduated with a law degree.

He had also learned to cook well and went on to open the renowned Asian restaurant Balooshai, at the Silk Mill, in Honley, in the early 1990s before moving the business to a site under the railway arches in Huddersfield town centre. He also opened a street food restaurant in Brighouse.
