Covid rates are up to triple UK average figures

COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across parts of Huddersfield – with one area recording an infection rate more than three times the national average.

Government figures have shown Kirklees’ current case rate stands at 469 new infections per 100,000 people.

But parts of Huddersfield are far exceeding the borough’s average, with Honley and Brockholes the hardest-hit.

The neighbourhood recorded 93 new cases in the seven days to October 4, according to an interactive map published by Public Health England. It means the area is currently posting an infection rate of 1,111.1 new infections per 100,000 people – more than three times the national average of 340.9.

Rates have also rocketed in Meltham, where 90 people returned a positive coronavirus test in the same time period. Although that number is slightly down from the previous week (-15), the town is still recording an extremely high case rate of 997.7 (per 100,000 people).

It comes as England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, warned influenza is a “significant public health concern” this winter.

We have used the interactive coronavirus map produced by Public Health England to find the number of cases and infection rates for each neighbourhood in Huddersfield and ranked them from highest to lowest.

The data shown in this list has been recorded over a seven-day period ending on October 4. The rolling rate is expressed per 100,000 people and is calculated by dividing the seven-day count by the area’s population and multiplying by 100,000.
