Sickening race hate messages sent to community campaigner

A COMMUNITY activist has been the target of horrendous racial abuse from a man who bombarded her with vile messages on Facebook.

Youth worker Tanisha Bramwell is well-known to those in the Dewsbury area having spent much of her lockdown delivering thousands of food parcels to her neighbours.

The mixed race 26-year-old also ran for a seat on Kirklees Council as an independent, but this has not stopped her being racially abused and harassed by others.

In August, she was subjected to a tirade of sickening messages from somebody she thought was using a fake account.

However, when she realised he was a real person and somebody a mutual friend knew, she said the hairs stood up on the back of her neck.

Ms Bramwell said: “The worst thing is that I made the assumption that this was a fake account.”

She added that she had been in the area of where the perpetrator lived earlier in the day before she began to receive message requests.

At first, Ms Bramwell ignored them, but they continued to flood her inbox as the man used a series of derogatory comments and horrendous language. She said: “He messaged again and when I realised he was a real person, the hair on the back of my neck stood up a bit.

“Me and my team came to the agreement that I wasn’t to travel alone at night.”

Ms Bramwell reported the ordeal to the police and the caller handled it “amazingly”.

She said: “This man must think it is acceptable to do what he did.

“He was happy to use his actual account which states where he works. He didn’t try to cover himself up.

“He either doesn’t care or he must have been under the influence of alcohol.

“I originally didn’t want to phone the police. He already hates me because I’m mixed race. What would he do if it cost him his job?”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Kirklees Police were contacted on August 21 this year by a woman who reported she had been the victim of hate offences via social media.

“Police recorded two hate crimes in connection with the report and made attempts to speak with the victim but were unable to establish contact.

“Police have now spoken with the complaint and an appointment to get further details from her has been made.”
