A NEW Caribbean restaurant has opened its doors to the public after more than seven months of hard labour and intense preparation, to get it up and running.

Jamaican-born Orlando Hinds, 41, is the brains behind Lando’s Jamaican Bar & Grill, the newest addition to Huddersfield town centre, and has spoken highly of his love and commitment to bringing a taste of the island to our shores.

He said: “Growing up in Spanish Town, Jamaica, in the 80s and 90s, there weren’t a lot of fast food outlets out there. So once you become a certain age, you have to start to learn how to cook and prepare your own breakfasts, your own food.”

“So it’s something that’s been embedded in me from a younger age. This love of flavour. But also being able to share that.”

Already the helmsman behind three successful restaurants, including The Spice of Life in Coventry and more recently from 2013-2017, Lando’s Jamaican Cafe in Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Huddersfield – this latest venture will mark his fourth, showing a true passion for all things culinary.

Much of his love of cooking has been attributed to the expertise passed on by his late mother, Pearline, who ran her own bar and restaurant in Jamaica.

Orlando said: “My mum had a big influence on me growing up and my cooking. She encouraged me and taught me a lot. It’s thanks to her that I love serving the public, bringing my foods and flavours to people. So I thought I’d do that here in Huddersfield town centre.

“It’s a real chance to bring some of that Jamaican sunshine to the slightly colder streets of Yorkshire!”
