How to keep the kids busy over half-term break

GREAT PLACES FOR A FAMILY DAY OUT THAT DON’T COST THE EARTH

- By JESS GRIEVESON-SMITH

IT’S the half-term holidays and there’s still plenty to do around Huddersfield.

The weather might not be as good but, thankfully, there’s plenty to do indoors across Huddersfield that is suitable for all ages.

Sometimes half-term can be dreaded when suddenly, the weather turns sour and you have no idea what to do with your little ones.

So from flying on a trampoline to playing laser tag, we’ve put together a list of some of the best things you can do in the half-term holidays.

We’ve made sure to select places that can be enjoyed in all weathers and aren’t that expensive too, so you can enjoy a day out without breaking the bank.

■■DARE 2 AIR

With eight different zones on one large inflatable, Dare 2 Air is suitable for all of the family.

Think of backflips and flying through the air, it’s bound to be lots of fun. There’s a sports zone, a wipeout zone and a freefall zone.

For children aged three and under, it’s free while for four and up it’s £7.50. For a group pass for four people, it costs £19.50.

■■HUDDERSFIELD LEISURE CENTRE SPLASH PARK

With reviews claiming it’s the ‘best leisure water experience in West Yorkshire,’ there’s lots to do for youngsters and adults alike.

Think water buckets, jets, a lazy river, small slides and a fun pool.

But for the bigger ones among us, there’s the water flume and side winder. During the school holidays, the slides are open all day.

For a family pass without the slides it costs £10. With the slides it’s £15.95.

HUDDERSFIELD CLIMBING CENTRE

For all ages, Freeklime is one of the best climbing centres around.

There’s lots of different walls ranging in difficulty and owner, Chris Whitehead, made it so bouldering could be fun for everyone.

Standard entry costs £8 and shoe hire is £3.

FIZZY LIZARD

This indoor play gym is a big hit with the little ones and a great place to blow off that excess energy.

From rope bridges to a ball pit, there’s a cafe too for adults watching their little ones. Considered one of the best for its friendly staff and good prices, a session can cost as little as £1.50.

It’s open Monday to Saturday from 9am - 4pm.

Over half-term, LaserZone run Munchkin Madness Kids Club every weekday from 1pm.

It’s usually jam-packed and offers everything from the kids club to advanced.

Huddersfield’s LaserZone is themed around a futuristic abandoned town, complete with a chemical plant, police station, auto shop, church, castle, warehouse and power station.

For one game it’s £5.25 and for four it’s £18.

For the kids club, it’s £8 for non members and £7 for members.

TOLSON MUSEUM AND RAVENSKNOWLE

It’s one perfect for a rainy day and to keep little minds busy. From Roman finds and textiles, to birds and transport, it’s fascinating.

The treasure house marks the fascinating, the curious and the amazing, featuring an infamous half-pig exhibit, which of course is one of the star attractions for young visitors. There tends to always be an event going on of some sort that little ones will be able to throw themselves into. Free entry.

■■BAGSHAW MUSEUM

It’s only about 30 minutes from the centre of Huddersfield. An Addams family-style building, Bagshaw Museum in Wilton Park has its own Egyptian tomb, a place to visit the ‘Spirit of South Asia’ and even somewhere to make music in the African Gallery – and what makes this place even better for a family trip out is that it’s free.

Roller skating is always a fun way to pass the time.

Here there’s not only that but Playworld actually hosts a four-storey soft play gym, food and drink all under one roof.

The centre’s skating rink has space for up to 120 skaters, and after you’ve done all the activities, you can sit down for a bite to eat.
