Mum gives birth in car after getting lost on way to hospital

- By JASMINE NORDEN

A MUM was forced to give birth to her daughter in her mother’s car – after they got lost on their way to the hospital.

Ali Bamford, 28, enlisted her mum Jane to drive her to hospital when she went into labour at 12.45am.

But they had never driven to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield from Ali’s new home in Birstall before and ended up taking a wrong turn.

Ali said: “Part of the motorway was closed so we had to come off at a different junction and weren’t sure where we were. I turned to my mum and told her that I needed to push and she told me that I didn’t but I was in too much pain. She had to pull over as soon as possible. She was really panicking and didn’t know what to do.

“It was so quick – I had her right there in the front seat and my mum had to sort out the umbilical cord.

“We had the sat nav on but my mum was in such a panic she was struggling to focus after we came off the motorway.”

After setting off just over an hour before, Ali had given birth to daughter Delilah by 2am.

Ali and her mum were left with a new-born baby at the side of the road, still not knowing where they were.

Luckily, a woman happened to be walking by at that moment who was able to help Ali’s mum with directions. It turned out they were just a mile away from Pinderfields Hospital, stuck in what they thought was a dead-end just off the A650. Ali’s mum got her to the hospital immediately, where she was rushed inside with her daughter by midwives and nurses.

Three weeks on, Delilah is doing fine at home with her mum and older sisters. Ali had her older daughters at Pinderfields, but had only done the route from her previous home in Mirfield before.

Ali said: “I can’t wait to tell her all about this when she’s older, I still can’t really believe it! I just want to find the woman who helped us so I can thank her as we had no clue where we were.”
