Field suffer last-minute heartbreak

- RUGBY UNION

HUDDERSFIELD were denied their second away win of the season by a try in the final moments of their game against Loughborough Students as they lost 33-29.

Field were losing 21-6 approaching half-time, but a try by hooker Liam Stapley on 38 minutes narrowed the gap and set the scene for a dramatic final 40 minutes.

The students were two converted tries to the good at the end of the first quarter. Two Will Milner penalties put Huddersfield on the scoreboard.

But Loughborough extended their lead with a third converted try five minutes before the interval, Jack Shiner dotting down after a neat assist from Griffin Phillipson. The try seemed to energise Field, who responded with the first of their three tries just before the break when they took a lineout catch cleanly and Stapley touched down in the corner from the drive and maul that followed.

Huddersfield lost lock John Sedgewick for ten minutes to a yellow card after the interval, but Milner notched his third penalty kick not long afterwards.

However, the students cashed-in on their one-man advantage, with full-back Karl Warner exploiting the space outside to score in the corner to make the score 26-14.

Once back to full complement, Huddersfield drew level with two tries in the space of 10 minutes.

Winger Kian Stewart rounded off an excellent passage of play involving forwards and backs, with a try in the corner. When captain Lewis Bradley scored, Milner’s conversion tied the scores.

He then gave field the lead with a beautifully-stuck, longrange penalty.

But in the dying seconds, the students capitalised on an attacking line-out five metres from the Huddersfield line, with Number 8, Nic Jakobsen, scored the winning try from the drive, with a successful touchline conversion adding a little salt to Huddersfield’s fresh wounds.
