One way to create ‘more problems’
COUNCILLORS LAUNCH PETITION TO FIGHT ROAD LAYOUT PLANS
A PETITION has been launched by two councillors against controversial plans to alter key roads.
Cahal Burke and Anthony Smith, (Lib Dem, Lindley), say some of the changes planned for Section D of the massive A629/Halifax/Huddersfield scheme are unnecessary and will create more problems than they solve.
Section D, (the area that runs from Ainley Top via Lindley and Edgerton to Huddersfield), includes a number of proposals, such as:
The existing footpath through Daisy Lea Lane Recreation Ground will become a shared route for all users with widening and surfacing improvements
On-road cycle routes along several routes in Lindley including Occupation Road which will become one way only to facilitate the introduction of a cycle lane
Lidget Street to be reduced to 20mph with priority crossings for cyclists and traffic calming with road humps
New cyclist and pedestrian crossing facilities at Thornhill Road/Occupation Road/Savile Road/Sunnybank Road junction
Clr Burke said: “Clr Anthony Smith and I have launched a petition against these unnecessary proposals which we believe will cause more problems than they will solve.
“We are visiting and writing to residents so that they have all the relevant information and details on the proposals.
“These proposals are not going down well with local residents and we are behind them, we all live in the area and we know the negative impact this proposal would have on our area.
“We want active travel and we want to encourage local residents be able to get about safely, but we only need changes in the right places where it is necessary and justified.
“We have many local roads and footpaths that need improving for pedestrians and cyclists. Priority should be given to those before any other scheme.
“A more joined-up approach needs to be taken, listening to our residents and various walking and cycling groups.
“The proposals also include making Occupation Road one-way. “We do have concerns about this particular proposal and we raised our concerns with the relevant council officers from the outset.”
You can find more information about the scheme, including the proposals, as well as associated plan drawings and documents at yourvoice.westyorks-ca. gov.uk/a629-halifax-hudds.
Opinions will be assessed and residents have until midnight on Tuesday to give their comments.
