Russell signs new deal with Giants

-

HUDDERSFIELD Giants halfback Oliver Russell has put pen to paper on a new contract ensuring his future at the club until the end of 2024.

The 23-year-old joined the academy system from Wigan and made his first-team debut for the Claret and Gold in 2018, aged 19.

He has since made 30 appearances for the club.

“It’s fantastic news that Olly has re-signed,” said head coach Ian Watson, who praised the impact the Oldham-born player has made to the club’s impressive start to their

Betfred Super League campaign this season.

“Since I’ve been at the club Olly’s worked really hard and because of that he’s now an experienced and confident player. He’s been absolutely exceptional for the team this year and his defence has been outstanding.

“His defence is a factor in him playing more games and being more confident because of that.

“He now sees himself as a first-team player rather than a kid and that’s why he’s been awarded a new contract.”

Russell has spent time on loan at Leigh, Batley, Workington and Halifax since joining the Giants, but is delighted to pledge his future to the club.

“I’m over the moon to have signed a new deal,” he said.

“I’m very happy here at the Giants. I’m getting game time at the minute, and I intend to keep working hard to try and fight for my position.

“I’m learning a lot from Ian Watson, the staff and senior players and I feel like this is the environment I need to be in right now for my own development.

“I have family ties to this club and every time I run out as a Giant, I’m proud to wear the shirt.”
