AN estate of 21 houses on land near Swallow Lane in Golcar has been given the green light.

The mix of three-, four- and fivebed detached, terraced, and semidetached houses, all two-storey, is earmarked for 1.8 acres of land close to Golcar Cricket Ground. Four of the 12 three-bed houses on site are classed as affordable and may be bought for rent by Kirklees Council. Two are classified as “starter homes” and two as “social rent”.

The new build is adjacent to an existing estate of 19 homes by the same developer. There was broad support for the scheme by members of Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-Committee (Mar 31). Eight voted in favour with three abstentions.

Clr Mohan Sokhal (Lab, Greenhead) praised the “good mixture” of three-, four- and five-bedroom homes whilst accepting no two-bedroom homes were being created. Clr Donna Bellamy (Con, Colne Valley) raised concerns about construction traffic using the “extremely busy” Swallow Lane. Officers responded by confirming that routing of construction vehicles to the site would be agreed before building work got underway

Planning consultant Jonathan Ainley from Savills, speaking on behalf of Cleckheaton-based Jones Homes (Yorkshire) Ltd, said “detailed discussions” had taken place with Kirklees Homes and Neighbourhoods, which manages council housing, regarding buying affordable homes for rent.

Jones Homes will pay £36,645 towards public open space and will make an education contribution of £37,233 towards “identifying need” at Colne Valley High School.
