Dump boss to clean up 2,000 tonnes of waste

- By MEGAN BANNER

THE operators of an illegal waste dump in Huddersfield have been ordered to remove 2,000 tonnes of rubbish.

The enormous piles of stinking waste has been left to rot on the site in Milnsbridge.

Huge piles of illegally deposited waste have been dumped at the Colne Vale Road site in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield which has called for the Environment Agency to speak up.

The agency has said the waste, which has caused locals to complain to Kirklees Council, ‘must be removed.’ Approximately 2,000 tonnes of waste were illegally tipped at the site between December 22, 2021 and January 10, 2022.

Locals have complained about the awful smells and are worried the massive amount of waste will pollute the canal and river. They are also worried about the fire risk. Pauline Ogden, whose house overlooks the site on Colne Vale Road, said the rubbish is at least 20ft high in places.

Residents complained that wagons were tipping waste ‘day and night’ for weeks and they were demanding answers as well as action. The Environment Agency has now issued an enforcement notice requiring the operator of the site to remove the unauthorised waste deposits and dispose of them at a suitably permitted facility.

There are strict rules governing the disposal and storage of waste, which are designed to help prevent fires and to protect people and the environment.

It is a criminal offence to store waste without the proper exemption or environmental permit. Failure to comply with the notice may lead to further enforcement action by the Environment Agency.

Waste crime seriously damages the environment and puts communities at risk. It undermines legitimate business and the investment and economic growth that go with it.

If you see waste crime, call the Environment Agency’s Incident Hotline on 0800 807060 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.

Businesses seeking to find out how to manage their waste in accordance with the appropriate regulations can call the Environment Agency on 0370 850 6506.
