Jack star Suranne on Anne’s strength

GENTLEMAN Jack star Suranne Jones has opened up on how her character Anne Lister’s positive energy helps her with her mental health.

After a long three-year wait, the second season of the BBC drama which charts the life of Anne Lister, returned to our screens.

Suranne Jones told The Examiner that coming back to Shibden Hall for a second time was a lot like coming home.

The first episode of the new series showed Anne Lister and Ann Walker’s love blossom as they tackle life as a married couple.

However, Ann Walker’s family were left blindsided as they haven’t seen her in months and discovered that the pair have moved in together at Shibden.

The actress alongside her costars for BBC period drama Gentleman Jack were out in force last month for the series two premiere at The Piece Hall in Halifax.

After the screening Suranne Jones, Gemma Whelan, who plays Marian Lister and show writer Sally Wainwright sat down for a Q&A session.

Suranne Jones went on to open up about her much-loved character Anne Lister and how her positivity has taught her a lot about her mental health.

She went on to say: “I’ve talked about my own mental health and I think that we talk about Anne Lister’s mental health and the fact that she is so positive and engaged with the world and that she feels things very deeply but she manages to dust herself off and pick herself up and move on.

“I think that in both seasons you can’t ignore when you are playing a character like this that and I think that is something that she has taught me and all of us actually and I feel it when I watch it.

“It’s something that she gives to the audience as an extra bonus that’s something you feel through watching her. And through the writing and music that supports Sally’s beautiful writing.”
