AN Innes Senior try right on full-time salvaged a point for Huddersfield Giants as they sensationally drew 20-20 with Leeds at Headingley Stadium.

The Claret and Gold fought back from 20-10 down with two minutes left, thanks to tries from Luke Yates and Senior with 26 seconds left, to dramatically send the match to Golden Point extra-time.

Neither side could land a winning drop goal, meaning the two sides shared the spoils.

The Rhinos headed into the game on the back of a five-game losing streak, while Giants were flying high after victory over Hull FC in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Ian Watson’s men had a chance to take the lead in the sixth minute after a penalty kick from Tui Lolohea, but the fullback’s attempt sailed wide.

Though Lolohea redeemed himself soon after when his timely pass set up Jermaine McGillvary untouched in the corner for an easy try. The fullback was unable to convert the score, leaving the Giants 4-0 ahead.

However the lead didn’t last long, with five minutes later Liam Sutcliffe crashing over after an effective dummy to tie it up and then Rhyse Martin’s first conversion edged the Rhinos in front 6-4.

Leeds extended their lead through Martin in the 26th minute, when he barged through some soft defence to score, before failing to convert his own try.

Three minutes later the Rhinos lost fullback Jack Walker with a leg injury, forcing the home side into a reshuffle at the back.

Right on half-time Giants were penalised for a high tackle by Joe Greenwood on James Bentley and Martin stepped up to nail the kick, crucially making it 12-4 at the break.

In the second half the Giants started strongly, forcing an early goal-line drop-out, before an injured Matty English limped off.

But strong Leeds defence smothered Huddersfield at every attempt, pushing Senior into touch.

The visitors were penalised for another high tackle on Bentley in the 47th minute, which Martin duly dispatched from in front to extend the lead to 14-4.

However, four minutes later the Giants cut the deficit when Leutele dived off after Jack Cogger’s smart offload.

Lolohea added the extras to make it 14-10 and put Giants back in the hunt.

In the 59th minute Morgan Gannon eased the pressure on the Rhinos when he powered over from short range to score.

Martin kicked the conversion to extend the lead back to 10 points to the raptures of the Headingley faithful, and victory seemed assured.

But the Giants scrapped to find a response, and in a crazy late period Yates touched down with two minutes left, before Senior acrobatically crossed in the corner to tie it up. Lolohea missed the conversion from the sideline to win the game.

Theo Fages’ drop goal attempt missed in the 83rd minute, before Blake Austin’s kick fell short.

In the second period of golden point Kruise Leeming hooked his drop goal attempt as did Austin at the death, leaving it a draw.
