Tributes to tragic News teenager who had ‘so much potential’

DEVASTATED MUM TELLS INQUEST SON WAS ‘BIG SOFTIE’

- By ANDREW ROBINSON

A DEVASTATED mum has paid tribute to her much-loved and popular son as a compassionate, loving, and funny young man who was always going out of his way to help others.

Dewsbury-born Jordan Ethan Lee Hoyle was found dead in his flat in Moldgreen, Huddersfield, just two weeks before his 18th birthday. He was described as a ‘cheeky chappie’ with an ‘infectious personality.’

West Yorkshire Police CID officers were called to the ‘supported living’ accommodation on Friday March 19, 2021, after Jordan had been found dead. An inquest into his death in Bradford heard that the cause of death was hanging. Police ruled out any third-party involvement.

Jordan’s mum Terri described her son as a ‘big softie’ who put on a ‘macho’ image and who had a ‘cheeky smile’ and was passionate about everything he did. She said Jordan was funny, loving, and was a compassionate person who would “do anything for anyone.”

Terri said that the last time she had spoken to Jordan, he said he loved her, was talking about plans and ‘everything seemed fine.’

In a statement, she said Jordan hadn’t had the easiest life but had a lot of fun times in his 17 years.

She wanted it placed on the record how upset she had been to discover through social media that her son had died. By the time police arrived in the afternoon, she already knew Jordan had passed away.

Terri said: “Jordan’s death is a tragedy and we are devastated by what happened. We all miss him.”

Rosie Khan, a social worker, told the inquest that Jordan had lived with an aunt from the age of five and then later in local authority accommodation under a ‘care order.’

In February 2021 he moved to a supported living flat in Moldgreen where he ‘flourished’ and settled in well. There had been some self-harming incidents and Jordan had sometimes struggled to accept the additional support that was available.

Jordan’s social worker described him as an ‘amazing’ young man who was devastated by his death.

“He had such an impression on people,” said Rosie. “He had so much potential.”

At the time of his death, there was ‘no inkling’ of any issues of concern, she added. Jordan was described as being happy and was said to be very popular with lots of friends.

Terri told the hearing: “It was completely out of the blue.”

She added: “I don’t think he meant to do it. I think he was experimenting and it went wrong.”

The inquest was told that Jordan had been worried about an impending court appearance over a criminal damage incident. He had been worried about what would happen to him but had been receiving support. Jordan had also received ‘threats’ via social media. His mum had advised him to block and ignore people who made threats.

Assistant coroner Crispin Oliver said there was no indication that Jordan was in crisis or that he was planning to end his life.

He recorded a narrative conclusion, saying that Jordan died due to self-suspension as a result of misadventure; a deliberate act that had unintended consequences.
