A POLICE operation has seen 19 drivers dealt with after they were spotted committing five of the most dangerous things you can do on the road.

The operation took place across Batley and Spen to crackdown on drivers committing the five key causes of serious crashes.

The Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team say they have more work planned after the weekend’s success.

Five of the drivers will have action taken against them for not having insurance, four for not wearing seatbelts, two for using their phones, one for running a red light, one for driving without due care and one for speeding. Each was issued with a Traffic Offence Report.

This means they will be investigated further and they could potentially receive fines, penalty points or other enforcement. Alongside this work, a stolen motorbike was also seized and one other vehicle was seized by the DVLA. Similar work took place in Huddersfield last week and in North Kirklees in early April, which say more than 20 vehicles seized for motoring offences. West Yorkshire says it remains committed to ‘Vision Zero,’ which is a road safety aim established alongside the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. This aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing mobility for all across West Yorkshire.

The police have also highlighted five offences which are key causes of crashes. These are speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, drink and drug driving, using a mobile phone and careless driving.

Inspector Charlotte Nicholls of the Batley and Spen NPT, said: “Authorities in West Yorkshire, including police, are committed to reducing the number of serious casualty collisions on our roads, and we have identified a Fatal 5 type of offence which we believe are key causes of these incidents.

“Our weekend operations in Batley and Spen are being mirrored by colleagues in other NPT’s in Kirklees, with a real focus on seatbelt, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use and speeding and driving in a careless manner.”

She added: “We know making roads safer is a big concern for Batley and Spen residents, and they will see more operations in their communities over the next few weeks.”

If you have footage of antisocial driving, you can submit it to West Yorkshire Police via the Operation Snap website or to your local NPT by calling 101 or using live chat.
