Bar hosting a truly authentic celebration of Bavarian beer
AVENUES PUB WANTS ITS OKTOBERFEST TO BE MUCH CLOSER TO THE REAL THING
A POPULAR Newland Avenue bar is bringing Oktoberfest to Hull – and organisers want to make it as authentic as possible.
The People’s Republic will be welcoming Lord Mayor Councillor Pete Allen on Saturday at 5pm as it launches its version of the world-famous Bavarian beer event, which will run until Sunday, October 7.
A spokesman for the bar said: “At the People’s Republic we’re all about authenticity. Our Oktoberfest will give you a true taste of the Munich beer festival – and it even has the Mayor’s seal of approval.
“We’re aiming to make our Oktoberfest mirror the real thing as closely as possible, so it opens on Saturday, September 22, and will end on Sunday, October 7, just like the actual event.
“There’ll be authentic Bavarian beers available, traditional – and some not so traditional – German music, and prizes to be won.”
Each Saturday throughout the fortnight, the bar will be showcasing a variety of German music, with a selection of German hip-hop kicking things off this weekend and a more traditional oompah band performing on September 29 and October 6.
The People’s Republic owner, Dave Rotheray, said: “We think people have a few misconceptions about Oktoberfest. They think that it’s only in October – it usually starts in September – and that it’s all about cheap pilsner and naff food.
“There are so many Oktoberfest events around now that all look the same. We wanted to do something that was much closer to the real thing.”
The People’s Republic has drafted in 20 Bavarian beers for Oktoberfest, offering something for everyone from fruity festival favourites such as Schneiderweisse Festweisse to lighter brews, such as Andechs Weiss and the hoppy Hofbrau Oktoberfest.
Visitors will be invited to tick off a list of the different beers sampled throughout the Oktoberfest fortnight, and anyone who tries all 20 will win a themed prize, including T-shirts.
