Ionians in top of table battle

-

HULL Ionians travel into uncharted territory for a first meeting against Hinckley in the National Two North Division’s top game of the day.

Hinckley were promoted last season and have made a big impact, winning all three matches to lie second.

Ionians, who were relegated at the end of last season, are unbeaten and top, having gained bonus points in all three games, whereas Hinckley have only taken two.

Both sides have had convincing wins against Tynedale and Peterborough Lions with Ionians edging the scoring compared to Hinckley.

As well as the battle on the pitch the build up will be a ‘battle of minds’ for both Directors of Rugby both of whom came through the Premiership and England systems at the same time.

Ionians’ DOR Martyn Wood played for Wasps, Bath and England, whilst Hinckley’s DOR George Chuter played for Leicester Tigers and England.

They played against each other at club level and joined numerous England training sessions together.

Ed Falkingham, who missed last week’s game through injury, will not be available again this week and subject to a late fitness test he may be joined by Isaac Green, who took a knock against Peterborough.

Otherwise, selection will be relatively easy for the coaches, as it is expected that last week’s team will remain the same.

After tomorrow Ionians face two equally tough home games against Yorkshire opponents Wharfedale and Stourbridge from the West Midlands.
