A PROUD DAY FOR RUNNERS

STREETS BECAME A SEA OF COLOUR FOR HULL MARATHON. PHIL WINTER REPORTS

-

Hull’s streets turned into a sea of colour yesterday as thousands of runners took part in the city’s 2018 marathon. The region’s longest running event, which took in sights including the Humber Bridge, East Park and Hull Marina, saw participants set off from the KCOM Stadium at 9am.

The men’s race was won by Jonathan Walton, with Georgina Schwiening the first to cross the line in the women’s event.

The organisers of Hull Marathon 2018 said: “A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, without their help the event wouldn’t have been possible.

“A big thank you also to all of the fundraisers, helping to spread awareness and raise money for such important causes.”

The sight of thousands of runners passing some of the city’s best-known landmarks proved to be quite spectacular.

For some runners, simply finishing the marathon was not enough, with a variety of impressive costumes on display.

A pair of “dinosaurs” were seen pounding the city’s streets, all in the name of charity.

The route saw runners leave the KCOM Stadium, before heading into the city centre and out to East Park.

From there, they turned around and came back into the centre, before heading west out of Hull and onto the landmark Humber Bridge.

The final stretch of the marathon saw them come back across the bridge, into west Hull before finishing up in the KCOM Stadium.

The first Hull Marathon was held in 2012 and, six years on, the event has grown in stature, with crowds lining the streets to cheer on the runners.
