A HULL man who said he was “buzzing” about finding out he was going to be a dad threatened to kill the unborn baby just months later.

Gary Kingsley said he was “absolutely buzzing” when he found out his partner was pregnant and promised to “look after them both” because it was “all he ever wanted”.

But just a few months later, Kingsley, 42, carried out a terrifying attack on his partner as he tried to strangle her with a sock.

He also threatened to kill his unborn child stating “f*** the baby” as he continued to grab the woman by her feet and force her legs back over the rest of her body, Hull Crown Court heard.

Prosecuting in Hull Crown Court on Friday, Stephen Welch said the pair had got into an argument on July 30 and Kingsley had become abusive to the woman.

She tried to leave and call the police but he took her phone from her, before carrying out the horrendous attack.

“He slapped her several times,” Mr Welch said. “He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back into the room and continued to slap her.

“He grabbed a sock and wrapped it around her throat. She thought he was going to kill her.

“He grabbed her by the hair again and when she said about the baby he said ‘f*** the baby, it’s probably not even mine’.

“The victim eventually managed to make her escape to a neighbour’s house and the police were called.”

The woman was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with injuries to her head, her face, her chest, her back and her legs. Clumps of her hair were also missing. She also had to undergo an emergency scan to make sure the baby was OK, which it was.

In a statement read out to the court the woman said she is still scared by what happened that day.

She said: “I have days where I want to go to sleep and never wake up.

“I am scared of what will happen when he is released from prison.”

Hull Crown Court heard this was not the first time Kingsley, of Mulcourt, north Hull, had attacked the woman. In November last year he hit her over the head with a broom until the head snapped off and pushed her on to the sofa.

Kingsley pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In mitigation, Paul Genney said Kingsley had “major problems” when it came to “accepting responsibility for his own actions”. He said at the time of the attack Kingsley had taken heroin and had lost control.

Mr Genney said: “He accepts the child is his and the baby is due some time in November.

“He would like to be present at the birth of the child and wants to have contact with the child.

“He does display remorse for what happened and has some understanding of what he did.”

Recorder Allison Hunter QC described the attack on the woman as “horrific and terrifying”.

“She must have been horrified by what you did,” she told Kingsley. “She was terrified you had caused fatal harm to your baby.

“This is not the first time you have assaulted her.

“I’m surprised she has not asked for a restraining order because I would have ordered one.”

Kingsley was sentenced to 31 months in prison.

“I have days where I want to go to sleep and never wake up Victim
