A COWBOY bar aims to open soon in Beverley, after a drinks and music licence was granted for a town centre venue.

Sheriff Bar is targeting a pre-christmas opening at the former Prezzo Italian restaurant, which shut earlier this year.

Murat Bayar, who runs Turkish tapas and wine bar Jardelle, has been granted an alcohol and music licence for a cowboy bar at the ex-prezzo venue by East Riding Council.

He is now hoping to sign the lease for the Saturday Market premises by early December and get the Sheriff Bar open before Christmas.

The country and western-style Sheriff Bar will be fitted out with saddle-type stools and barrel tables to create a cowboy-themed look at the two-storey building.

Customers will also be able to buy cowboy hats at the bar – or come in their own.

Mr Bayar is delighted to have been granted a licence for the venue.

He says: “It’s a good location and something different.

“We will have barrel tables, barrel chairs, horse saddle stools, wagon wheels and big posters for the cowboy theme.

“We will sell cowboy hats on the bar. Some people have said they already have their cowboy boots and hats and will come in their own.”

Mr Bayar has been granted a licence for live it’s music and recorded music, from Monday to Sunday, 9am to 2am and the sale of alcohol on the premises until 1.45am.

He is planning live band nights, as well as DJ nights with a dance floor.

The venue would accommodate about 160 customers, with a VIP area upstairs.

Mr Bayar, who opened Jardelle tapas and wine bar in North Bar Within in 2016, knows Beverley’s night-time economy well after 19 years in the town.

He is not intending to offer food at the cowboy venue, where he aims to create 15 jobs.

Italian chain Prezzo closed its restaurant at the Beverley venue six months ago, in a wave of 94 branch closures designed to save the struggling business.

Leeds-based chartered surveyors Sanderson Weatherall has been advertising the 2,300sqft property as a restaurant/retail unit to let, leasehold £70,000 per annum.
