Only a people’s vote can save us

-

The letter from Rob Milner (Mailbox, October 19) makes reference to “parasites” when referring to the EU Officials who are trying to negotiate an exit deal.

His choice of language is offensive. The EU officials are acting on behalf of the 27 national governments to try and preserve the rules of a club that Britain is pulling out of.

Would he use the same language to describe the civil servants in Whitehall who are acting on behalf of UK Government Ministers? I think not.

He also makes vague allegations about Members of the European Parliament claiming expenses.

If he is looking for evidence of politicians fiddling their expenses, then he has no need to look as far as Brussels.

Some of the MPS in UK Parliament demonstrated their ability to steal from the public purse in 2009 and four of them went to prison. The public only got to hear the details because of a leak.

Nobody is suggesting that the EU is perfect and, yes, it does need reform. But if it was the evil land of Mordor that Mr Milner imagines, then why have 27 countries joined it and only one (UK) is pulling out without a clue as to where it is heading.

The clowns and jokers who sold us Brexit have jumped ship and, meanwhile, the Tories fight among themselves.

Faced with this disaster, only a people’s vote can get us out of this mess. David Nolan, Ferriby Road, Hessle.
