Restaurant shuts after 21 years but will still host events

LETTER ON DOORS OF VENUE CONFIRMS CLOSURE

POPULAR restaurant Medici has closed after 21 years in business in North Ferriby.

A typed letter, which has appeared on the doors of the building in High Street, North Ferriby, confirms the closure, stating: “We will no longer be operating as a restaurant and will only be available for private hire.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and hope to see you here at a private event in the future.”

A further statement said: “Due to growing demand, Medici is excited to announce that we now specialize in events only.

“With its decadent interior and impressive food and drinks packages, Medici provides the ideal venue for your party’s needs.

“A DJ is available upon request, join us and party the night away.”

The restaurant was opened by Medi Karimian in 1997 and soon became well-known for serving good-quality Italian food.

Over the years the restaurant has tried different things to increase its popularity.

In December 2015 Bar 10 was launched. Later, in 2016 the restaurant went through a rebrand. The manager at the time said they wanted to create a late-night bar and dancing venue.

It promised a resident DJ playing the best in funky house, RNB, old school and club classics from 10pm.

A new cocktail bar, called Trees, with a 1.30am licence, opened within the same building as the main restaurant.

Speaking at the time, general manager Gareth Smith said he spotted a gap in the market in the cocktail and champagne bar industry in the region.

He Smith said: “I realised we had a great bar we weren’t making the best use of, so I suggested we turn it into a cocktail and Champagne bar.

“People have a tendency to think we just have the restaurant, but we have a late licence, so we thought it was a good idea to have a bar separate from the restaurant.”

The restaurant has mixed reviews on Trip Advisor.

A total of 27 per cent of people rated it as excellent, but 23 per cent of people described it as terrible.

The latest review, posted four days ago, cites poor service, yet another review, posted a week ago said the service was fabulous.

As of Wednesday, there was nothing on the Medici website or Facebook page about the sudden closure.

The last post on the Medici Facebook page was from September 19.

The Mail has contacted Medici Restaurant for comment.
