A POPULAR pub at the heart of Cottingham has stopped serving Sunday dinners and has been put up for sale.

The Railway in Thwaite Street has been a cornerstone of the community for years but has now shut the kitchen on Sundays after it was left without a chef.

The venue, which is now closed on Sundays and Mondays, is also due to shut for good from the end of the month if, as the current manager moves on, a new leaseholder cannot be found.

The pub still opens for five days a week and will continue to do so for the rest of this month.

A brief post on the company’s website explains that the food offering has been suspended.

It reads: “From Monday, October 15 our kitchen will be closed. No food will be available from that date until further notice.”

Speaking to the Mail, the manager of The Railway pub said: “We don’t open anymore on Sundays because the chef has left.

“We’re moving at the end of the month. They’ve had an open day and are openly looking for buyers.”

The lease for the premises is now up for grabs with rent charged at £17,500 per year. The venue is described as a “traditional detached property” and has a lounge bar and public bar, as well as a large beer garden.

Part of the advertisement for the lease reads: “The Railway Hotel is a traditional detached property, which occupies a highly visible main road position on the approach to Cottingham.

“A welcoming and relaxed atmosphere by day transforms into a lively evening venue providing live entertainment and events all year round.

“The pub benefits from two distinct trading areas and is traditionally decorated throughout.

“The public bar has its own bar servery with handsome back bar fittings complemented by stained-glass features and parquet flooring; this area is perfect for casual drinking and caters for sports enthusiasts with a dartboard, pool table and live sports. The lounge bar is a sizeable room, which also has its own bar servery and can cater for circa 60 dining covers; its floorplan lends itself to live entertainment and private functions.

“There is a well-equipped kitchen, which is suitable for the development of a comprehensive food offering.”
