Man claiming to have coronaviru­s ‘coughed’ in police officer’s face

A MAN has been arrested after he reportedly coughed in a police officer’s face and told him he had Covid-19.

Humberside Police officers were called to Dorset Street, off Hessle Road, just after midnight on Thursday, July 9 to reports that a man had been seen shouting in the street with a baseball bat.

The man was then reported to have been picked up by a woman in a car.

Police stopped the car and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray.

While he was arrested, the man repeatedly coughed in an officer’s face, telling him he had Covid-19. He was then arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A 32-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

A spokeswoma­n for Humberside Police, said: “A man was arrested in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of affray and assault, and woman was arrested for drinkdrivi­ng after an incident in Dorset Street in Hull.

“Just after midnight a caller reported that a man holding a baseball bat was in the street, he then is reported to have been picked up by a woman in a car.

“Our officers attended the scene and stopped a vehicle on a nearby street.

“A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, and the driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

“During the arrest of the man, he is said to have repeatedly coughed in an officer’s face stating he had Covid-19. Subsequent­ly, the man was further arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“Both remain in our custody at this time as our investigat­ion continues.”
