St Mary’s living up to its world-class status

- By DEBORAH HALL

WITH its pioneering, creative and challenging approach to education, St Mary’s College, Voluntary Catholic Academy, takes second spot in the region’s Real Schools Guide 2020 rankings.

It is another great show of strength for St Mary’s, which was awarded World Class School status in 2017 – the first secondary school in the city of Hull and one of just two schools in the whole of Yorkshire to achieve the mark of quality.

Last year, the school, which is rated “outstanding” by Ofsted, was thrilled to announce exceptional performances from students in their GCSE subjects.

Head of School Dave Perry said at the time that the achievements of students and staff demonstrated the “sustained, world class, authentic and inclusive education which St Mary’s provides, year on year”.

Just one of the highlights of 2019 was St Mary’s best Ebacc outcomes ever – the Ebacc, or English Baccalaureate, is made up of subjects which are considered essential to many degrees and likely to “open doors” beyond school.

The Government’s ambition is to see 75 per cent of pupils studying the Ebacc subject combination at GCSE by 2022, and 90 per cent by 2025.

Ged Fitzpatrick, Executive Headteacher at the Cranbrook Avenue school, said: “St Mary’s College is one of the most successful schools in the country and is rightly proud of its reputation and track record in delivering the highest of standards for all students but particularly at Key Stage 4 and for our Sixth Form.

“The hard work and dedication of our staff and students never stops.”

The state-of-the-art campus in west Hull places great emphasis on pastoral care and extra-curricular opportunities for students.

“Our multi-national community celebrates the diversity of cultural and language traditions contributed by students and staff,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

“As an International School we offer exceptional opportunities to experience the life, language and culture of other countries, to develop global awareness and a respect for justice, peace, the climate and our environment.”
