POLICE are still investigating the circumstances surrounding “cracking noise” that prompted a huge armed response in Anlaby Road.

The origins of the noise at flats nearby, which residents feared were gunshots, remains a mystery.

The incident, which started at around 9pm on Tuesday, saw police close off Anlaby Road between Ferensway and Park Street, as well as surrounding roads including Cambridge Street, Pease Street and St Lukes Street.

Around 20 customers also became trapped in the nearby pub The Lair as armed officers told them to “get in” and “get away from the windows”. Hundreds of people in surrounding flats were also told to stay inside.

No one was injured and no one has yet be arrested in connection with the incident.

Yesterday morning the scene of the incident was very quiet with no further police presence or cordon in place. Residents said they heard nothing about what happened.

Yesterday, Humberside Police confirmed investigations are continuing.

A drone was deployed as police sealed off a major area around blocks of flats where there had been reports of gunshots.

A specialist team from Humberside Police was seen inside the large police cordon flying the drone.

On Tuesday night Chief Superintendent Darren Wildbore said: “Inquiries will continue. However, there is not believed to be any wider threat or risk to the public at this time. We will always take any report of this nature seriously and respond appropriately, as the safety of the public and ensuring their protection will always be our priority.”
