Skipper Honeyman makes key demands of team-mates

HULL City’s two away wins so far in League One this season have shown there’s no shortage of battling qualities within Grant Mccann’s squad.

Games at Gillingham and most recently on Saturday against Northampton have shown that City are up for the fight, and not afraid to get their hands dirty in order to get the right result.

That willingness to be brave, to earn the right to win the battle and then the war was something praised by Mccann at Sixfields, and is something echoed by George Honeyman.

City’s in-form playmaker was handed the captain’s armband on Saturday in the absence of Richie Smallwood, and led by example, scoring one and creating the other in the 2-0 victory, whilst also seeing a goal chalked off for offside in an all round fine display.

“Once you start getting the feeling of clean sheets and winning games, it becomes a very powerful thing in a dressing room and as a squad we’re in a very good place,” Honeyman told the club website.

“We want to keep building on that and keep pushing each other so we have a successful season.

“It’s been a good start but it’s all about consistency now. We have to keep pushing ourselves in terms of our standards and making sure that we keep bringing that quality, tempo and aggression to the table.”

Given the absence of Smallwood, expected to be around three weeks, Honeyman can hope to remain skipper, which he says is a privilege.

“It’s a nice honour to have,” the 26-year-old admitted.

“I’m always proud to lead the team out but it doesn’t change my approach to the game and when we’ve got a team all pushing in the same direction, it’s an easy team to lead out and it was a privilege to do that.”
