A LOVING Hull grandad who was “family orientated” and “always smiling and happy” tragically died after falling down the stairs.

Keith Elton, 60, of Goodrich Close near Beverley Road, passed away at Hull Royal Infirmary on February 2 this year after doctors were unable to save him.

An inquest held at Hull Coroners’ Court found that Mr Elton died due to an accident after tumbling down 14 stairs in the family home after drinking at a friend’s house with his wife.

Mr Elton’s family had to make the sad decision to turn off his life support a day after he was admitted to hospital as medics said that he would not survive his head injuries.

He was described by his wife as someone who “lived for” his grandchildren and a person who adored his family.

Mrs Elton witnessed her husband’s fall and rang paramedics for assistance, but sadly nothing could be done to save him.

She said the pair met in 2002 and married in 2007 and he took on the role as stepdad to her daughters and was like a father to them and did not have his own children.

In evidence given to the court, Mrs Elton said that her husband went to David Lister School and was hard working and had jobs in the machinery operating industry.

However, he developed health conditions after smoking and drinking heavily, including COPD and asthma

In October 2019 he suffered a stroke that he never recovered from, making him unsteady on his feet.

Following this, his wife said: “He complained that he could not use his hands like he used to and struggled with tasks and felt like a burden and that he could not do anything.

“His life revolved around his grandchildren who he lived for - they were his life.

“He was a family orientated man who was always smiling and always happy.”

A post-mortem established that Mr Elton was more than two and a half times over the legal drink drive limit when he died.

Dr Ramsden said that the high level of alcohol in his system contributed towards his death and that he passed away due to the effects of a severe head injury that was unsurvivable, as well as chronic alcohol dependency.

Coroner Rosemary Baxter gave a conclusion of accidental death.

His life revolved around his grandchildren who he lived for - they were his life. He was always smiling and always happy Mrs Elton
